Advent Daily Devotional - Day 23

John 7:37-38

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

As Christmas Day comes close, it can feel like a ‘finish line’ at times. For many of us, we put in a huge amount of work – at home with preparations to celebrate with friends and family; and many of us work hard to complete projects at work before the Christmas break. We have full calendars and full minds, while we run low on physical energy and feel emotionally drained, just waiting for that ‘finish line’ where preparations are over, and we can celebrate and rest.

This exhaustion often leaves us yearning for deeper replenishment than rest alone can provide. When we finally reach that ‘finish line,’ what if the true refreshment we need is not just physical but spiritual? This is where Jesus’ declaration about living water resonates so deeply.

Today, I’m struck by how Jesus made this statement.

He stood up and said in a loud voice that anyone can come to Him for replenishment. It wasn’t whispered or implied—Jesus wanted everyone to hear who He was and what He could do for them.

The ‘Feast of Tabernacles’, mentioned here, commemorated God’s provision during the Israelites’ 40 years in the wilderness. On the last day, a ceremonial water-pouring ritual symbolised God’s provision of rain and life-giving water. Amidst this festival centred on God’s faithfulness, Jesus declared that He could be their ultimate provision—the living water that refreshes, revitalises, and overflows.

This moment was about more than affirming God’s past faithfulness. Jesus revealed His divine identity, showing that He and the Father are one (John 10:30). His invitation promised not just sustenance but an abundance that transforms and empowers, enabling people to bless others with what they receive.

As we celebrate the incarnation—Jesus’ coming 2,000 years ago, His future return, and His presence in our daily lives—may we hear His loud voice declaring over us that we can come to Him and ‘drink.’ Amidst the festivities, jobs and celebrations, may you encounter the living water of Jesus, enabling you to appreciate this season more deeply.

Questions…

Take a moment to pause and respond to Jesus’ invitation personally.

  • Where do you feel the need for renewal?

  • How can His living water meet your needs this season?

As you reflect, may you experience the profound joy and peace that come from knowing Jesus as your source of provision, and may it empower you to bless others from the abundance He provides.
